Clarifying Roles & Developing Schedules
Implementing an enrichment initiative is definitely the fun part, but it is important to clarify roles at this stage.
- What is the keeper’s role?
- The supervisor/manager?
- The veterinarian?
We suggest that it is important to identify who will do what and by when. This is easily accomplished by listing enrichment to be given on a calendar. Keepers may simply place their initials next to the item on the calendar once it is provided. If any initiatives that are listed on the calendar are not provided, then these can be crossed off. Alternatively, if additional enrichment initiatives are provided, these can be added to the calendar, and initialed once they are provided. In this way, the calendar provides an accurate record of what enrichment was given and when. Alternatives to placing specific items on a calendar can be to place behaviors you wish to encourage on a calendar or create a menu of items keepers from which can select . For some teams these methods of scheduling enrichment provide a more creative and engaging process. This information may prove useful not only as a way to ensure enrichment initiatives are provided on a daily basis, but also as a form of documentation that can be use to investigate the effects that enrichment has on the animals.
