Species: Black rhinoceros
Integrating natural history, the unique individuals, and exhibit design allows us to create a list of desired behaviors:
- Locomotion – walk, gallop
- Self maintenance – wallow, dust bathe, rub and scratch against objects
- Browse selectively, using prehensile lip (preference for leguminous herbs and shrubs)
- Primary sensory modalities – hearing, smelling
- Horn use – remove bark, break off high branches, excavate soil of salt licks
- Scent marking
These behaviors may be encouraged through permanent exhibit structures, rotating items, social opportunities, interactions with keepers and more.
